The METU Department of Mathematics and Science Education is an academic center that combines science and education to train qualified teachers in Turkey and worldwide. Our programs ensure that students acquire both strong pedagogical knowledge and advanced disciplinary knowledge.

  • The duration of study for programs in our department is 4 years.
  • Since the language of instruction at METU is English, students who are accepted into our program attend the preparatory class.
  • Our students with sufficient English proficiency can start taking 1st-year courses by skipping the preparatory class if they obtain an adequate score in the exam held at the beginning of the academic year.

Programs

  1. Science Education Undergraduate Program: It aims to teach students the basic principles of science and enable them to integrate this knowledge into the classroom with effective teaching methods. The program aims to train teachers equipped with pedagogical skills and modern educational technologies.

  2. Elementary Mathematics Education Undergraduate Program: This program trains mathematics teachers at the elementary level and offers comprehensive education that develops mathematical thinking skills. Both theoretical and practical courses ensure that students gain competence in mathematical subjects.

  3. Physics Education Undergraduate Program: This program focuses on teaching the basic principles of physics to students and training qualified physics teachers who can effectively teach this knowledge to their students. It offers laboratory-supported education.

  4. Chemistry Education Undergraduate Program: This program, which focuses on chemistry teaching, provides students with knowledge and skills in the field of chemistry while enabling them to learn effective teaching techniques. Emphasis is placed on reinforcing theoretical knowledge with practical courses.

  5. Mathematics Education Undergraduate Program: This program trains mathematics teachers at the middle and high school levels, provides students with comprehensive mathematics education, develops their teaching skills, and strengthens their problem-solving abilities.

  6. Mathematics Education Master's Program: This program aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills in mathematics education and develop teachers' professional competencies and research capacities in the field of education.

  7. Science Education Master's Program: This program is designed for teachers who want to specialize in science education. It includes three majors: Physics, Chemistry, and Science Education. Each major aims to teach advanced teaching techniques and methods in its field.

  8. Mathematics Education Doctoral Program: This program, aimed at students who want to pursue an academic career in mathematics education, provides in-depth knowledge on educational research and mathematics teaching.

  9. Science Education Doctoral Program: This program is designed for teachers and academics who wish to pursue doctoral-level research in science education. It develops research and application skills in Physics, Chemistry, and Science Education majors.

    • Physics Laboratory: Laboratories that allow for experimental studies in physics lessons aim to develop students' scientific research skills.
    • Chemistry and Biology Laboratories: These laboratories, equipped with modern equipment that contributes to students' science education, are used in practical lessons.
